The Association of Anatomical Pathology Technology (AAPT) is the recognised professional body for anatomical pathology technologists employed in hospital and public mortuaries across the UK. Since its formation in 2003 AAPT has been acknowledged as the principal voice for the profession by all major stakeholders allied to anatomical pathology technology. We worked with AAPT to provide them with a new responsive website and an online Continuous Professional Development (CPD) system to enhance their membership’s CPD experience.
AAPT’s website was starting to show some signs of age visually, having been designed for smaller computer screens and before responsive websites became standard. The website difficult to read on mobile devices, an important consideration now with most members wishing to have smartphone access as access to PCs was not always possible at the workplace.
Secondly the AAPT Continuous Professional Development (CPD) system wasn’t available online, and it was felt that it was important to meet expectations for members and prospective members to be able to access their CPD accounts on mobile devices.
We had worked with AAPT previously and had built a good rapport with them, so when the were ready to move forward they contacted us to solve their problems.
To ensure that the AAPT website was modern and accessible on all devices, a responsive design was mandatory. To complement this new functionality AAPT’s website needed to be re skinned to not only look visually modern, but also redesign to ensure optimum performance on mobile devices. Being a membership website, we analysed several other membership websites to become familiar with the tone and functionality requirements to ensure that AAPT’s new website not only promoted new membership sign ups, but satisfied their current membership.
When it came to the CPD function, we were in our element. Having previously built a number of CPD systems for other organisations we already had the framework in place and it was a matter of adapting it to AAPT’s spec. This meant that we had two main objectives: the first was reworking the front end of our existing CPD solution to make in responsive on all devices and the other was to build AAPT an online backend function to replace their current system.
Using our custom content management system (CMS) Cadenza, we redesigned AAPT’s website to make visually more modern and responsive on all devices. This also meant devising a simple bespoke CMS Admin interface which would allow AAPT to fulfill any ongoing editing requirements and management needed. To build the CPD system, we took our existing CDP framework, originally developed with the IBMS and redeveloped it to be responsive and up to date, as per AAPT’s specific requirements. We developed a new front end dashboard that allow users to see a summary of their CPD activities and credits as well as allowing users to upload their diplomas to the system, which could then be approved by AAPT’s admin team.
Since the implementation of the new site and CDP system, AAPT’s membership have been able to benefit from having a responsive website experience on all of their devices. They have also benefited from being able to fulfil their CPD obligations online as opposed to working with paper hard copies. This has created a more convenient and secure CPD experience for AAPT.
